Creative Fatigue Is Killing Your Meta Ads. Here's How to Spot It Before It Tanks Your ROAS

Most brands only notice creative fatigue after it has already cost them. These are the signals we watch daily and the creative rotation system we use to stay ahead of it.

Creative fatigue is the silent killer of Meta ad performance. Your CPMs creep up, your CTR drifts down, your ROAS softens. If you are not watching closely, you will spend weeks blaming the algorithm before you realise the real culprit is that your audience has simply seen your ads too many times.

What creative fatigue actually looks like in the data

The obvious sign is frequency going up while ROAS goes down. But by the time that is visible in your dashboard, you have already left money on the table. The earlier signals are:

  • CTR declining 15%+ week-over-week on a previously stable creative
  • Hook rate (3-second video views divided by impressions) falling below 25%
  • Cost per landing page view increasing while CPM stays flat
  • Negative comment volume increasing ("seen this everywhere")

The rotation system we use

We run a three-tier creative rotation across most accounts:

Tier 1: Core performers. Your 2 to 3 proven creatives that are consistently hitting target ROAS. These stay live but get monitored weekly for fatigue signals.

Tier 2: Challengers. New creatives launched at low budget to find the next winner. We typically test 4 to 6 new concepts per month per client.

Tier 3: Retired. Creatives pulled from rotation but not deleted. Audiences reset over 90 days. A creative that fatigued in Q1 can often be reactivated in Q3 with strong results.

How often should you refresh creative?

It depends on your spend level and audience size. At $5k per month, a strong creative might run 8 to 10 weeks before fatiguing. At $50k per month reaching a smaller niche audience, you might see fatigue in 2 to 3 weeks.

The rule we use: monitor weekly, refresh proactively rather than reactively.

What makes a creative last longer

The creatives that stay fresh longest tend to be educational (evergreen value), testimonial-led (social proof does not age quickly), and problem-aware (speaking to a pain that does not go away).

Pure promotional ads, such as sale, discount, or limited time offers, fatigue fastest. They are useful for peaks, not for sustained scaling.
